There are many reasons the power could go out. we aren't here to speculate on how. But rather what to do after lights go out. Many ways to bring light and electricity into your camp, home or BOL after the power is gone. lets break down and focus many on light in this post today.

lets go run through some good options.

Solar-The most effective way to keep the lights and power on. quiet, efficient and a goog long term investment. There are several systems and types as well, direct, pack-able, portable and fixed system all with pros and cons. Lets say cabin/camper/camp site.

solar generators as they are called are a great option to store electricity from the sun without spending over 5k and not having a huge system sticking out like a sore thumb.

Bigger systems have the advantage to pull and store a lot more power but at the cost of sight. there are MANY different options for solar lighting, remote, motion sensing, dusk till dawn and so forth. I'll post some links for solar items at the bottom.

Candles/Lanterns- These have been around for hundreds of years. **OPEN FLAMES INSIDE YOUR HOME ARE DANGEROUS** Always take great care when using candles and lanterns, not only is there an open flame but the risk of C02 as well. They commercially sell many different kinds. I recommend the unscented ones. tea light candles are great because they are small and cheap but burn quickly. you'll often see 8 hour stick candles labeled as "emergency", these are no different as other candles of the same size. Its just a way to up the price. For longevity i recommend a liquid 100 hour candle or something similar. they also make reflector housings (like a light house, candle lantern). 2,3,4 wick candles also produce more light and heat, so keep that in mind. I custom make my own long life candle(see below). lanterns are great, produce more light and heat, but at the cost of more CO2 output. please use a meter or alarm when those are being used, they can run on lamp oil, kerosene and liquid paraffin as well as other fuels. I'll post below some links mentioned here.

Battery- This has been a solid back up option for many many years. Inline back up batteries, replaceable batteries, rechargeable batteries, there are a lot to pick from! UPS and other inline products are good for computers and wifi and security systems. While Rechargeable batteries with a way to recharge them is a solid mobile pick. Battery powered flashlights and bulbs have been around for years. as time continues they become more efficient and brighter. I'll list some of my favorite rechargeable at the end of the post.

Crank/Manual- There is only so many times you can charge a battery, light a candle or have the power of the sun. But as long has there is living creatures. There will be manual power. DIY or store bought they are the under dog of the power industry.

sometimes tiresome or noisy. I'll post a few links below.

Generator-Another product that has been in use for awhile now. fuel driven generators, they produce a good amount of power depending on size, most of them would be effective enough to light your whole house. cons of them are noise, pollution, CO2 output and fuel.

DIY candles: These are very easy to make. you can use any clay, metal or glass container as a candle holder. use one wick or three or whatever you want. my next project to to make one in a Terra cottar window box and use sheet steel to divide up about 6 sections to help control wax. I will update with some more pictures and links when i have a little more time to fine tune a few things.
