Share with your friends and family! Radios! Lets talk about comms, Very important communication devices, your cell phone doesn't always work. CB,FRS,MURS and GMRS(needs license) radios are usually inexpensive and easy to use. While HAM is the best option, they can be expensive and need a license. While it may see many people are not HAMMies, actually there are HAM radio users everywhere, there is likely hundreds in your local county. There is actually a special network of people (some DHS has even recruited to help in disasters) that monitor emergency and popular channels. Its always good to have a radio in most any situation i.e camping, hiking, over landing and more. make sure you remember extra batteries or a way to recharge your radios! So even if your not using your radio actively, you can monitor the channels for others who may need help or just want a friendly chat. If you want more info on the subject, theres plenty of online and readable content out there. Another additional item than can come in handy is a handheld scanner. Most scanners (since they only RX) have very large memory banks for thousands of channels. You can divide them into banks(categories) by area, type etc.

Large quality antenna can also allow you to listen in on distant areas from your location. Their is much more to learn on the subject of radios, how they work, antennas, repeaters and so on. Best way to make sure you buy the right radio and know how to use it is RESEARCH! Seriously, do some, figure out what you need to buy to fit your needs. Train with it, get your license if the radio requires it. It will only further your knowledge.

I've included some of my favorite radio models below, also if you don't already know about the 3-3-3 plan, read up! 3-3-3 radio plan! https://radiofreeq.wordpress.com/2013/07/15/3-3-3-radio-plan-for-shtf-communications/

FRS: short range and low power. Good for close quaters, camp grounds and driving close together.

Many channels and sub channels to use. Not very secure though.

GRMS: longer range than FRS, up to 25 miles on higher wattage. Not secure like FRS.

CB: old school radio technology. Completely unsecure like the previous two. Range can vary on equipment generally 1 to 3 miles. With illegal boosters it can be hundreds of miles with the right antenna.

HAM: The king of radios. Catching a skip or using many different types of equipment you can talk across the world. Like GRMS these also require a license to use, but its low cost and easy to study for. Many different frequencies and modes to transmit on.
