So lets get down to the basics of gear bags. There is a few different bag types and the things you could find in them varies as well. Some times generally referred to just as B.O.B or bug out bag, these bags often carry life saving gear and other essentials for its user. Every person that you Plan on being with you should carry their own version of a bag(kids too).
Links will be provided for items underlined,If you have a question on certain items just ask!
I'll break down each style with a general setup and provide some pictures of my bags too.
EDC: Every Day Carry- so as the name suggests, this is stuff you would carry with you every day. These are the Bare bones basics of what you feel OK with leaving the house with.
Keys,Phone, wallet,Knife,Gun and extra Mag (where allowed), carry sized flashlight, multi tool and fire starter.

GHB/DCB: Get Home Bag/Day Carry Bag- These bags are usually small, usually around 5 to 10 L in size. often one strap or messenger style bag, they do not usually stick out to the common on looker. They are packed with the idea of complementing your EDC and getting you home or through out the day where ever you are. Common items would be as followed:
Battery pack(rechargeable/solar) and cord for you devices, extra flashlight and battery, more extra mags. Emergency type poncho and Mylar blanket, small first aid kit, large water bottle and or small water purification device or tabs. Aspirin, allergy meds and a days supply of any prescription meds. often times power bars or food of that type are kept as well.

72HRB/3DB- 72 Hour Bag/3 Day Bag- I actually personally don't have a need for one of these bags as I work with in an hour of home and if i'm traveling outside that Range I put in a little extra into my day bag. These are the bags you see all over the internet for sale by companies. They usually are of 15 to 30L in size. Honestly, I can help you build a great bag for a better price tag below $150, which is what you see a lot of these Pre-made bags go for. Pack your own bag with stuff that is of actual use and decent quality. If your leaving for more than 24 hours, chances are that things aren't that great and you want to have good gear. Items that typically are packed into these bags can vary but here is a basic break down by category.
Water: steel bottle or canteen, water filter straw or device, filters, purifacation tabs.
Fire: various tinders, Ferro rod and striker, lighter, Flint wheel, Esbit style fuel tabs.

BOB/INCH/GTFO: Bug Out Bag/I'm Never Coming Home/Get The F#*k Out bags-
These bags are the heavy hitter! 30 to 90L in size. Usually these are MOLLE,ALICE or hiking bags in style. While weight is always a debate,I see an average of around 30 Lbs. These are the bag your grabbing in a real EOTWAWKI (End Of The World As We Know It) situation. While it may be just the end of your normal world, These bags are built for true survival.
They are often paired with plate carriers and long guns in a true EOT(End of Times) senario.
